A LETTER TO MY YOUNGER SELF

Image
A LETTER TO MY YOUNGER SELF It is fascinating how life happens once to all of us. Every second, every minute, draws you closer to your end. Only one chance to get it right. So little time to make your mark.   And yet – In the knowledge that you lie somewhere in the abyss – Somewhere in the shadows – I choose to write to you. There are things I would have made known to you. Perhaps if I knew what I now know.   I would have told you – To know that you don’t know. To know that you should know. To know that you should strive to know. To know that you don’t know even when you know. To know that you will never know. And yet you should know.   I would have told you – To care less when men doubt you. And yet to listen when men doubt you. To love when love is in the air. To love when there is nothing in the air. To work when work is due. To rest when rest is due. To work when none is due.   I would have told y...

WHO TOOK AWAY MY INNOCENCE?

WHO TOOK AWAY MY INNOCENCE? ( Innocence to mean without much knowledge of your surrounding/ oblivious of what is happening around you; man to mean both man and woman; same case with manhood) I walked by a kid's park yesterday And decided to stop and watch them – Watch the kids - I watched as they ran around in circles With their arms stretched out wide I felt compelled to join them But was skeptical of being labelled a mad man Lest someone makes a call to a mental hospital I mean, only mad men ran around in circles I watched them roll in the mud I watched them fall from their bikes And then rise up and jump back on laughing heartily I watched them fight and scream at each other And then hold hands a few moments later I wondered when I stopped being a kid I could recall when I used to enjoy being tossed in the air - Now I get an adrenaline rush whenever my feet leave the ground Back then when police officers were my heroes Back then when ice cream and waffles were good for my healt...

Poetry: The Sword in the Stone

The legend of the sword stone they told Though –  I’ve lived long enough To know it was not just another tale Men travelled from far and wide To try their luck with the sword Others with the rock Or perhaps both –  Because the two were inseparable Some came with might Some with spells Others only with faith Yet all wanting the crown The sword dared not move an inch The stone dared not loosen its grip The sun rose and rose again More men came Just as they came, they left With the same results –  With no results Then came one last man A man of a god Or perhaps a god of a man And yet in the eyes of men There was nothing fascinating about him –  His eyes were dull His height was 5’6” And his head almost bald And yet those gifted with a third eye Could see there was more to him They saw –  They saw that when he spoke people listened They saw that he valued all men the same They saw that he could not tell gold and silver apart They saw that he had taken no life...

THE ROLE OF THE CHURCH IN TODAY'S ECONOMY - WHY THE BREAD OF LIFE MAY NOT BE ENOUGH FOR YOUR CONGREGATION

In recent times, believers have questioned the motive behind many Kenyan churches; is it to preach the gospel or to raise funds? Is it to feed the flock or feed from the flock? Even more recently, believers have openly termed Kenyan Churches as 'materialistic' or schemes aimed at making a few 'men of God' millionaires. In the words of PLO Lumumba, 'The church has become so mechanically and financially structured that there is no room for God.' With the latest scandals and cults claiming to read from the scripture, it is difficult to defend the church. Yet, there is something that we all agree on; the church cannot run without resources; hence the church cannot run without money. Churches are not exempted from paying rent and electricity bills, members who serve full time in the ministry also have families to feed. Hence the real question becomes, what is the role of the church in the financial lives of believers? Firstly, the church should build a community amo...
